Yesterday’s “Parents and Tots Music and English Play” launch was a great success! The babies and toddlers and their moms are a delightful group to play for, and everyone seemed to be on the same page about enjoying the music and letting the English happen as a side benefit. The response was so good that we will continue weekly through March, and then take another look at the schedule when the new school year starts in April. One of the things that always surprises me about playing for toddlers is how much they focus on what you’re doing. They…

Tsunami Driftwood Violin

  • Posted on February 26, 2012 at 3:13 pm

Today on Facebook one of my friends posted a link to a story about a violin made of tsunami driftwood from the March 11, 2011 earthquake. According to the article, a 71-year old violin maker and restorer based in Japan and Italy, made the violin partially from the driftwood, and it will be played by 1,000 of the world’s great violinists, starting on March 11 here in Japan. At first I loved the idea, thinking gosh – the only thing I could think of that I’d like more was if it were a ukulele – or better yet lots of ukuleles. And then I began to imagine what holding that instrument would feel like, the energy in it, the hopes and dreams, and the responsibility of making music on something that was born out of those tragic moments. It was so real in that imagining that it was clear why the violin is a match and how far-removed that is from what I like to express emotionally through the uke. Below is the link to the original article:

Some Experimenting

  • Posted on February 23, 2012 at 8:25 pm

I’m doing some experimenting with the site – wanting to nurture it a bit more, and bring in more uke joy of all kinds. I’ve also added the connection to our Facebook page, so looking forward to some fun interaction with you all there as well. Thank you for being part of our growing community and for sharing how we can be of service to you!

In love and gratitude and ukulele hugs!

ピッチパイプでチューニング Tuning Uke with a Pitchpipe

小さくて、便利なピッチパイプ。あれ?今聞くともしかしてペッグの回し方は逆かな~。回し方が合うために弦を弾きながら回してください。
Pitchpipes are small and convenient. Uh-oh – watching this now, I might have said the opposite direction about turning the pegs. In ordre to make sure the pitch is moving in the direction you want, keep playing the string as you turn the peg.
